Vanguard

The Vanguard Project (1995-2002)

The Vanguard Project is a study of HIV rates and risk factors in young men between the ages of 15 and 30, who self-identify as gay or bisexual, in the Greater Vancouver area of British Columbia, Canada. Recruitment began in May 1995 and ended in March 2002 and men were recruited through posters, advertising and word-of-moth. Participants completed annual self-administered questionnaires and provided blood samples for HIV testing either annually or every 6 months. The study is coordinated by the BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS, which is a joint project of St. Paul’s Hospital and the University of British Columbia, and funded by grants from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (Health Canada), the Canadian Foundation for Innovation and the Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research.
